Born on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, ishga is an award-winning luxury skincare brand harnessing the restorative power of the ocean to create high-performance, certified organic skincare.
At the heart of every ishga product is its unique Hebridean seaweed extract, created from four types of seaweed sustainably hand-harvested from the shores of the Isle of Lewis. Naturally abundant in vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and potent antioxidants, seaweed has remarkable properties that help protect, nourish and transform the skin.
Using a bespoke extraction process, ishga captures the natural goodness of freshly harvested seaweed to create its powerful bioactive complex. Combining the healing power of nature with scientific expertise, this unique extract forms the foundation of a range of results-driven skincare designed to support healthy, radiant skin and deliver efficacy across all skin types.
The ishga story began in 2013 with childhood friends Malcolm Macrae and Martin Macleod. Having returned home to the Isle of Lewis after studying at the University of Glasgow, Malcolm worked within pharmaceuticals before moving into water testing, where he reconnected with Martin, who had experience working within the local seaweed industry. Sharing an entrepreneurial spirit and an appreciation for the extraordinary natural resources of their island home, they began exploring the potential of Hebridean seaweed. Alongside Malcolm’s wife, Joanna, they experimented with ways to harness its naturally rich concentration of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants within skincare. From those early experiments, ishga was born.
Today, ishga remains proudly rooted in the Outer Hebrides, with sustainability and respect for the natural environment integral to the brand. Seaweed is sustainably hand-harvested in small quantities, with harvesting locations rotated to allow natural regeneration and protect the biodiversity of the shoreline. It is used fresh rather than dried or stored, helping to minimise unnecessary energy and water consumption while preserving its natural properties.
Certified organic to COSMOS and Soil Association standards, ishga combines carefully selected natural ingredients with Hebridean seaweed and locally sourced Hebridean spring water to create luxurious, effective formulas that care for both skin and the environment.
More than skincare, ishga is an invitation to reconnect with nature and experience the restoring powers of the ocean. From the wild shores of the Outer Hebrides to luxury spas and skincare rituals around the world, ishga brings together nature, science and sustainability to transform the skin while connecting mind, body and soul back to the sea.
