Newhall Estate
About this business

“Think heritage house, wild-glamour landscapes and a celebration that belongs entirely to you.”

Do you allow real candles?
We do! However, we take a health and safety approach as to how they are used. For ceremonies we do allow real candles, but nothing on the floor of the aisle (we’ve seen too many dresses/kilts/veils catch fire over the years). For dinner, we’re happy for you to have real candles on the dinner tables (as long as they are in appropriate holders; no candles straight to table/tablecloth, they still need to be in appropriate holders/votives/stands. For the evening reception, we then take all real candles away.
Do you allow sparklers?
We do, we love a sparkler shot! Please make us aware beforehand if you are bringing sparklers on site, and when you hope to use them, so we can get the necessary safety provisions ready.
Are you dog friendly?
We are a dog friendly venue; dogs are family too! We kindly ask that there are no more than 3 dogs staying with us on site, and we charge a fee of £25 per dog to procure specialised cleaning products and additional cleaning for after their stay. Please see your Rooming List document, which lists bedrooms which dogs can stay overnight; we also have onsite outdoor kennels.
Can I bring my own catering for the check-in day/morning of wedding/day after wedding?
Absolutely! We don’t charge you anything additional for bringing your own food and drinks (including alcohol) for the days you are staying with us (not including the formal wedding elements).
If you are thinking of booking an external food vendor, please let us know and we will organise their set-up.
Can coaches/buses access Newhall?
Coaches and buses can access the Estate, up to a maximum of 70-seaters. If you have booked a coach or bus to take your guests to/from the Estate, please let us know and we can advise the best access points based on their size.
Do we have to use your recommended suppliers?
You aren’t contracted to use our recommended suppliers; we have these in place as trusted vendors who know the Estate well. We do however require that you pick from our panel of caterers for your wedding day elements (canapes/dinner/ b a r).
What is the check-in/check-out times?
Our standard Check-In time is 12 noon, with access to the cottages from 3pm (cottages residents are welcome to wait in the main house until the accommodation is ready). Check-Out time (boo!) as standard is 11am (please check your contract for stated check-in/ check-out time).
Should you wish to extend your celebrations with us, please contact us directly for options including adding on extra nights, or hourly extensions.
Are you accessible friendly?
We are! All our event spaces are accessible, in addition to having 4-bedroom options on the ground floor. One of these bedrooms (Flower Room), has a wet room style bathroom, as well as direct access to our lawns.
Do you have any additional bed options for children/babies?
We do! On site, we have 2 x Z-Beds and 2 x Travel Cots. Z-Beds are for children aged 2 – 12, travel cots are for babies aged 0 – 2. Please note the babies are not included in the maximum 30 residential guests in the house, however the children over the age of 4 years are. Please see your Rooming List document for what rooms can accommodate Z-Beds and Cots.
Do you have a highchair?
We keep 3 x highchairs on site, however if you require more, please feel free to bring your own from home or organise additional from your chosen caterer.
Does Newhall hold an alcohol licence?
As Newhall Estate operates as a self-catering private home for the ‘non-wedding’ times, we are not required to hold an alcohol licence. On the wedding day, when alcohol is being distributed to non-residential guests, your chosen caterer carries the alcohol licence.
Do you have sound systems available?
As part of your exclusive use hire package, you have access to our integrated PA system within the Coach House (for background music and speeches), in addition to 2 x portable all weather Sony speakers for use throughout the stay.
I need to submit my M10 forms, what council area do I contact?
Newhall Estate lies within the council district of Midlothian Council. To submit your forms, please view the Midlothian Council website, and their office building can be found in the town of Dalkeith.
Are there any games or activities we can do on the Estate?
As part of your exclusive use hire package, you have access to our lawn games (giant Jenga, croquet and cornhole). There is also a tennis court on site, which you have open access too. If you are thinking bigger scale, we can also organise activities such as Highland Games, Archery, Clay Pigeon Shooting and Axe Throwing – just speak to us and we’ll provide the details.
Are there limitations on decorations?
A general rule of thumb is no decorations that would leave damage to surfaces, walls, floors etc. Please do not affix anything directly to walls.
Can I invite external guests to join us the night before/the day after?
As our self-catering insurance policy covers a maximum of 41 residential guests, we cannot allow more than 41 guests on site without a Newhall Event Manager being on site. Please note there may be an additional fee to have an Event Manager stay for night before dinners/day after wedding events which non-residential guests are invited to – please speak to your event manager for more information.
