Step inside the charming and unique world of wedding venue Restoration Yard

Looking for a wedding venue where you have free reign to create a totally bespoke day, tailored to your personal tastes but also want the support system of an experienced team?

We may just have found your ideal setting in the Restoration Yard.

Set in the heart of the 1,000 acre Dalkeith Country Park just 20 minutes from Edinburgh, Restoration Yard is a gorgeous, re-imagined 18th century stables and courtyard where the expert staff can offer couples an entirely bespoke, customised experience.

“Everything we do is tailored to their wants and needs,” explains Gillian Heath, Head of Food & Beverage from the venue.

“From the drinks served at the reception to the garnish on their food, couples can decide exactly what they like and we make it happen.”

The history

Restoration Yard began life as a thriving 18th century stableyard housing the horses and grooms of royalty and dignitaries as they visited Dalkieth Palace.

But after years of neglect the stableyard fell into disrepair.

Gillian takes up the story – “The germ of what Restoration Yard is now grew out of the need to restore these category one-listed stables within Dalkeith Country Park.

Restoration Yard offers so much charm and character.

“It has a history and a uniqueness that not many places can compete with.

“From the rustic, Tuscan-style stables to the grandeur of The Orangerie and the acres of wildlife surrounding it, Restoration Yard truly is a one of a kind, memorable venue.”

Saying ‘I do’ at restoration yard

As we’ve already mentioned, Restoration Yard prides itself on offering couples complete freedom to shape their wedding day any way they want.

However, if so much flexibility leaves you slightly unsure where to start, rest assured each wedding couple is assigned a wedding coordinator who is with them every step of the way to take away all the stress and pressure and allow them to enjoy the journey.

“We are not just a wedding venue, we are a lovely support system for our brides and grooms,” explains Gillian.

Most couples who hold their day at Restoration Yard choose to have the entire day there, from ceremony right through to the evening reception.

Each schedule runs according to that couple’s exact needs, but to help them get started the team presents all to-be-weds with a basic wedding schedule template that they can change accordingly.

“Usually, our ceremonies start around 2pm and the drinks reception starts at 2.30pm and takes place at The Orangerie,” says Gillian.

“Most drinks receptions are around one hour to an hour and a half, but we can make it shorter or longer depending on what the couple would like.”

Following drinks, the guests make their way to The Kitchen where speeches are followed by the wedding breakfast which typically lasts between an hour and a half to two hours.

“We then usually do a small turnover of the room to create space for the dancefloor (this only takes about 10 minutes) and then we go right into the evening reception.”

All Restoration Yard weddings finish at midnight.

Personal preference

Of course, this schedule is all just a guide but couples who marry at Restoration Yard tend to be looking for a smaller venue (the capacity is 90 day guests, with 120 max for the evening reception) where they’ll be fully supported by the team and can personalise their day to reflect themselves.

Gillian says, “Our wedding couples love the unique blend of our historic setting combined with the rustic, quirky style of the venue.”

One such wedding couple who revelled in the freedom to go where they wanted with their day was a couple who tied the knot in May 2022.

“They wanted to incorporate both their Malaysian and Scottish heritages and the fusion of the two cultures was incredibly special,” remembers Gillian.

“From the traditional Malaysian tea ceremony and lion dance to the handfasting and quaich, the seamless blend of two cultures coming together was like no other wedding I have seen before.

“It was truly phenomenal.”

It’s worth noting that although Restoration Yard has a list of suppliers they can recommend, couples are free to use external suppliers if they wish, particularly for unique and personal touches.

Dinner is served

Freedom to choose the exact menu you wish to serve guests is another major draw at Restoration Yard with The Kitchen offering an eclectic set of menus for weddings, including a relaxed family-style barbecue menu and a three-course menu.

“Our menus can be tailored and personalised to the couple’s needs and personal tastes,” adds Gillian.

“Having a unique menu that incorporates one of your favourite dishes or tailoring the menu to suit your guests’ preferences, which is why the more relaxed ‘help yourself’ family style menus (like our barbecue menu) are becoming increasingly more popular.
