There’s something so special about a wedding guest list that’s small and perfectly formed.

And it becomes even more wonderful when you find the perfect venue to host your VIP guest list.

Let’s rewind, though. For those not in the know, a micro-wedding is all about stripping everything back so you can focus on what’s really important – you two tying the knot, of course.

Whilst the average UK nuptials are said to have 82 day guests and 103 in the evening, going micro means paring it back to around 20.

It’s often shorter time-wise than a traditional wedding day and having fewer heads to cater for means you can spend your pennies on really treating yourselves and your VIPs.

Scotland offers so much for couples who want to tie the knot in a small, intimate ceremony. Here are 14 of YSW’s fave venues for hosting a wee wedding…

Barony Castle Hotel

A hidden gem is the perfect place for a micro-wedding and we have just the one… meet Barony Castle.

It sits in the pretty Scottish Borders, nestled within 25 acres of beautiful grounds yet just 35 minutes from Edinburgh. And it simply oozes romance.

As soon as you arrive (did we mention you’ll pass some lovely alpacas as you make your way up the drive?), you’ll see the architectural masterpiece with its tall white towers and gently fluttering flags.

The enchanting castle has a range of indoor and outdoor spaces where you can say ‘I do’ then celebrate after, from the 16th century altar to the charming conservatory.

Our fave spot for smaller weddings? It has to be the Elibank Suite. Decorated in gorgeous neutral tones, it’s a beautiful blank canvas, complete with floor-to-ceiling windows. Natural light galore!

Brisbane House

Marry by the sea at this exclusive-use waterside venue on the stunning Ayrshire coast in Largs. And take advantage of the newly refurbished ceremony and reception suite.

If you’re a water baby you’ll love the sea views from the revamped space, plus it has doors that lead out onto a terrace. Perfect if the Scottish weather plays ball on the day of your wee wedding!

The venue is exclusively for you and your guests on your wedding day and there are so many parts of it to take advantage of while you’re there – did we mention the new, dedicated wedding prep room? And the jaw-dropping duplex honeymoon suite? There’s a king-size bed (with a pop-up TV), a glam chandelier and a risen spa bath with views to die for.

PS. Head to the pebble beach across the road with your photographer for some super-romantic shots!

If you’re planning intimate nuptials in Glasgow, you’ll want to seek out Citation, which is in the heart of Merchant City.

You’ll perhaps want to look into the historic yet chic venue’s Twilight package too.

Twilight couples tie the knot at dusk, a concept that can work really well with a small but special guest list.

Nothing else is small about this unique building though. There’s a definite air of grandeur throughout and the old Glasgow court building is packed with charm. There’s exposed brick, rustic wooden floors, an elegant staircase and a dreamy heated balcony, complete with fairy-lit pillars.

This makes a stunning photo spot but is equally a beautiful place to take a moment just you two.

Set in the picturesque Glasgow countryside, this is a rustic venue full of country charm.

And the team are passionate about working with you to create a wedding day that’s all about you – however fancy or chilled you’d like it to be.

That said, they’ve decked the space out with loads of thoughtfully curated whimsical décor (from fairy lights to flowers) to get you started.

And they even give you a sound system for no extra cost! FYI there’s a salon and spa retreat on-site for ultimate ease on your wedding morning… And a cheeky pamper beforehand because why not!?

Fyvie Castle

If you’re thinking of a romantic fairytale wedding with a few of your faves, Fyvie Castle is well-worth a look.

Tucked in the heart of Aberdeenshire, the grand, enchanting castle is steeped in myth, legend and folklore – and it’s beautiful to boot.

Outside the baronial building has enviable architecture – towers and turrets galore. Inside there is world-famous art, elegant drapes, ornate ceilings and handsome wood panelling everywhere you turn.

Safe to say you won’t need to think about adding your own wedding décor if you don’t want to!

If your small but perfectly formed guest list wants to stay over, the eight-bedroom Preston Tower Apartment offers luxury self-catering accommodation for up to 16 people within the castle walls.

Then you can retreat to the 200-year-old barn to indulge in some all-round twinkly-rustic-cosy-ness.

You’ll find an on-site wedding suite available for the day and your wedding night.

Also included with the venue is a dedicated wedding planning service, and they’ll also oversee the smooth running on the day… Brilliant! Oh, and did we mention llamas…?

Hetland Hall

Gretna Green is famous for a cheeky elopement but if you want to invite some family and friends, turning just the two of you into a small gathering, why not seek out a special venue nearby?

Just 15 minutes from Gretna, Hetland Hall is a stately home that’s all about timeless, elegant and very luxurious vibes – perfect for a couple who want to treat themselves and their guests.

We love the idea of saying your vows in the garden because the views are oh-so-pretty. You’ll be looking over the Solway Firth and the mountains of the Lake District, but the venue itself boasts lush country grounds.

One of the best spots inside has to be the opulent Penthouse Suite. It’s the perfect place to chill out the night before (hello jacuzzi bath!) and come back to as newlyweds. You might never want to go home!

The Caves

Another gem from the award-winning Unusual Venues Edinburgh collection is The Caves, hidden beneath the hustle and bustle of urban life, in the depths of the 18th century South Bridge.

As soon as you walk through the door you’ll be blown away by the unforgettable atmosphere it has to offer to-be-weds – and you could easily start thinking you’re tucked away in a magical castle in the middle of nowhere.

A beautiful blend of historic charm and modern facilities, each and every room has a story to tell.

From the vaults that served as the stables to the French Cavalry (who were at one time body guards to the Royal Family) to remains of the houses that pre-date the Bridge itself, it’ll certainly get your guests talking.
