Cape Town, the Garden Route and the Big Five Safari
Animal-lovers this is the honeymoon for you!
What better way to kick off married life than going in search of the Big Five in South Africa?
But don’t be fooled into thinking you’ll be spending your entire time on a game reserve.
You’ll find plenty of other expertly-curated activities to keep you busy during your 12-day sojourn, including penguin-watching, visiting some of South Africa’s finest vineyards and exploring Cape Town itself.
Begin your honeymoon with a direct flight from Glasgow to Cape Town before transferring to the seaside town of Hermanus, calling at Stony Point, home to a unique colony of African penguins, on the way.
After spending your first night in Hermanus you’ll journey to the Garden Route Game Lodge in the heart of a privately-operated reserve.
This is your home for the next two nights.
Set in the shadow of the Langeberg mountains, you’ll get to experience real bucket list safari games drives in search of the Big Five (lions, rhinos, elephants, leopards and buffalo) before returning to the comfort of your lodge and enjoying typical African dinners.
On day five of this amazing adventure you’ll travel to Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of the world, in the heart of Little Karoo plain.
The world’s largest birds have been farmed here for 130 years and you’ll get to sample a taste of their high-protein meat with a barbecue lunch before you visit the famous Cango Caves.
Get up close and personal with the stalactites and stalagmites before you head on to Mossel Bay for your next two nights.
We said this honeymoon was varied and during your stay at Mossel Bay you’ll get to travel to coastal Knysna for a cruise on the lagoon, followed by a guided 4×4 trek up the headland.
Then for a total change of pace it’s off to wine country with a tour of the vineyards of Franschhoek and, of course, some tastings.
On day eight it’s on to historic Stellenbosch before taking a journey to Cape Town, where you’ll stay for the next three nights.
An orientation tour will take in historical landmarks like Castle of Good Hope, the House of Parliament and Company’s Gardens.
Then if the weather’s on your side you’ll ascend the iconic Table Mountain in a rotating cable car that offers a 360-degree view as it climbs.
The next day you’re up early to take a trip along the scenic Hout Bay and the Cape Peninsula and on to Cape Point, the headland overlooking the most southerly point.
You’ll board the cable-drawn Flying Dutchman Funicular for a ride up to the summit and breathtaking views over the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
The rest of your time in Cape Town can be spent exploring the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens or perhaps scoping out the infamous Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.
