Descending the steep hill into Largs it’s blowing a gale and as we turn off the windswept seafront the lights of Brisbane House are most welcome.
I spent a lot of my childhood in the Ayrshire town but it’s over 20 years since I was last here and a lot has changed, not least the hotel which has undergone a complete glow-up.
Manorview Group took over Brisbane House in May 2022 and it was closed from November to March while the refurbishment was carried out.
And you can tell.
From the pergola-ed walkway at the front which screams ‘wedding photo opp’ and would be perfect for a sparkler send-off, to the freshly-laid paving and the reception with its stunning contemporary chandelier, it exudes luxury.
And that’s before we even reach our room!
All bedrooms are accessed via the double stairway, perfect for pre ceremony pictures with the bride on one staircase and her bridesmaids on the other.
Everything has been completed to the highest standard with subtle art deco nods in the glittering light fittings.
However, nothing quite prepares us for the brand new duplex honeymoon Caledonian Suite.
It’s honestly the last word in elegance.
The bottom floor is dominated by the comfiest bed, complete with a TV that rises up from the foot of the bed, and a beautiful bathroom.
But as you climb the glass spiral staircase to the second floor this honeymoon suite hits next level luxury.
A round spa bath occupies the middle of the room, looking out through glass bi-fold doors onto your own private balcony and the view over the water to Great Cumbrae and Bute behind.
Don’t fancy a bath? There’s a separate shower and steam room, and I love the well-stocked bar.
Besides the tasteful décor and tactile furnishings, it’s all about the little touches here, from the complimentary cocktails in the suite, to the fact the staff ensure your bath is drawn and ready in time for your arrival at the end of your wedding.
You won’t want to leave!
The next morning I meet wedding events coordinator Rachel Stewart for a show-round of this stunning venue, which is now exclusive use for weddings and can accommodate weddings with up to 130 days guests, and a maximum of 200 in the evening.
We meet in the main ceremony and reception Brisbane Suite and again, the luxurious upgrade is evident everywhere you look.
Ceremonies are conducted against the glass bi-fold doors which open onto the terrace and take full advantage of that sea view, and the room is partitioned by heavy curtains, through which the bride makes her grand entrance down the aisle.
Following the ceremony, drinks are served in the Cochrane suite while the newlyweds usually make their way down to the beach for their photos.
Then it’s back into the Brisbane Suite for dinner and dancing.
You’ll love the bar that runs the full length of the room as well as the colour-changing lights – perfect for when you hit the dance floor.
Perhaps my favourite space in the hotel (besides the Caledonian Suite) has to be the Wallace Suite, a dedicated bridal prep room that can be accessed from 8am.
Again, the owners have thought of everything, with three hair and make-up stations, a gold bar from which to hang dresses, and a shower room.
Plus there’s a minibar for a wee glass of fizz as you get ready.
