10 of the coolest city centre wedding venues in Scotland for 2023/4

Don’t you just love seeing a real wedding feature that’s taken place right in the middle of one of Scotland’s bright and buzzing city centres?
From the handsome concrete jungles up in Aberdeen to the patriotic feel on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile to the utterly cool vibes Glasgow naturally oozes, urban weddings are a photographer’s paradise.
But that’s not all – they’re so convenient too. Transport links are (sometimes quite literally) on the doorstep, accommodation within or near the venue is plentiful and if you need to grab something last minute (safety pins, mints, etc.!), you’re in prime position.
So, whether you’re planning a romantic elopement, an intimate celebration for 10 or a big knees up for 200, we’ve rounded up some of our fave stylish city venues where the team will pull out all the stops to give you VIP treatment on the big day.
Previously the old Glasgow sheriff court building, Citation is a unique historic venue in the heart of Merchant City – perfect if you’re looking for an air of grandeur with all the essentials on your doorstep.
The team prides itself on offering a style of wedding for everyone, from intimate nuptials to all-out affairs, and everything from midweek packages to winter weddings. Citation even provides a special twilight wedding package for those who’d prefer a shorter day that involves tying the knot at a dusk.
But whatever time of day or year you choose, we bet you fall in love with the charm of this venue – exposed brick, rustic wooden floors, an elegant staircase and a heated balcony with its fairy lit pillars (the most special place to steal a moment just the two of you).
Unusual Venues Edinburgh
As the name suggests, this is not one venue but three distinct locations, all in the heart of Scotland’s beautiful capital. Nestled in Edinburgh’s historic Old Town, you could be forgiven for thinking you’re tucked away in a magical, atmospheric castle in the middle of nowhere.
But these characterful hidden gems exist beneath all the hustle and bustle of urban life.
Choose from the vaulted cellars of Marlin’s Wynd, which date back to the 1540s; The Rowantree (the cosy watering hole of key figures of the Scottish Enlightenment) and The Caves, which forms the sub-structure of the city’s South Bridge and is ideal for larger celebrations. Oh, did we mention they’re all exclusive use? This means you can party in private with your favourite people in a secret city setting.
Virgin Hotels Edinburgh
Since introducing Virgin Hotels and Greyfriars Hall to Edinburgh last year, Virgin Hotels has brought a new lease of life to the former Cowgatehead Church.
This prime city venue boasts an incredible gothic vaulted ceiling, from which hangs the world’s first 3D printed, bio-plastic chandelier – clearly, if you’re looking to tie the knot somewhere that marries traditional ecclesiastical architecture with a contemporary flair and luxury accommodation, this is it.
We especially love the sultry Scarlet Lounge with its plush red interiors, the impressive roof terrace and the foodie offering – your wedding menu could feature the likes of langoustines with heritage tomato tartare and gazpacho to start, a main of braised lamb shoulder with sweet potato and miso mas, rounded off with a crips lemon tart or chocolate and blood orange cremeux. Delish!
Not just beautiful to look at, 200 SVS is packed full of history too. Formerly the North British & Mercantile Building, it was built back in 1929 and sits in the heart of Glasgow’s city centre.
Whether you’re looking for a small informal gathering or a grand celebration for hundreds, the team pride themselves on being able to create an exclusive package just for you.
And the same goes for the catering – whilst the venue’s talented chefs can create decadent drinks, delicious nibbles and elegant banquet dinners, they’re happy to pull together new dishes based on your personal tastes.
The five star service continues when it comes to those unforgettable little touches too. Whether you’re looking for a red carpet arrival or a fancy flower wall, you can take full advantage of their little black book of contacts.
Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa
Set within walking distance of some of Dundee’s top attractions, Apex Hotel is a chic 4-star venue with lots to offer to-be-weds. Whether you’re looking to recreate a fairytale dreamland or after a classic and modern white wedding, Apex can deliver with its exceptional City Quay Suite – it can host up to 450 for a drinks’ reception, you know!
If you’re planning something smaller with up to 100 guests, check out the Art Gallery with its pretty views of the quay, River Tay and Tay Road Bridge. Going really intimate? Dine with 12 of your faves in the private dining room (your wedding breakfast will be all about honest cooking and locally sourced produce – fine food from the land, sea and field) then head out to the city for a funky photoshoot.
Do check out the hotel’s Yu Spa the day after for relaxation and rejuvenation after an epic time!
Hotel du Vin, Glasgow
Occupying an exquisite tree-lined Victorian terrace in the fashionable and vibrant West End of Glasgow (yet just 30 minutes from lovely Loch Lomond), Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens is something very special. At this luxury boutique hotel, you have a choice of rooms that can cater for a wedding for just the two of you or one that has up to 80 people attending.
Having been sympathetically restored, each stylish space boasts lots of characterful original features like open fireplaces, ornate corniced ceilings and bay windows – all of which just scream ‘photo opportunity’!
There are so many hidden gems within the hotel too, from the packed wine cellar to the intriguing cigar shack to the well-curated whisky room. And wedding staples like food and accommodation? They’re truly out of this world. You’re going to love it here.
Another gem in Dundee, Malmaison offers “luxury dun’ differently” with “spaces of all shapes and sizes, ready to be filled with you and your very special guests.”
We love their vibe already! Here, you can view an impressive range of unconventional rooms, from The Discovery (seating 10 for private dining with a view) to the Tay Suite, which accommodates up to 180, to the Chez Mal Brasserie & Bar for exclusive use (capacity 90).
If imaginative canapés, master mixologists, eccentric interiors tickle your fancy, you’ll love the wedding packages where you can tailor your food and drinks (afternoon tea, anyone?) then get loads of the detail thrown in, from table linen and table plans to tealights. They really have thought of everything – make sure to check out the drinks and nibbles packages you can arrange to have delivered while you get wedding-ready!
When it comes to city venues, The Bonham offers the best of both worlds – a quiet, leafy setting that’s just a few minutes away from Edinburgh’s buzzing city centre.
Once inside the three townhouses that make up the venue, you’ll realise the place oozes luxury and elegance. We absolutely adore the thoughtfully modernised Georgian and Victorian interiors where classic fabrics and colours meet sparkly chandeliers.
The divine Dean Suite hosts weddings for up to 40 guests but if you’re looking for something really intimate, you’re going to want The Snug, which is cosy and secluded with glorious rich décor. Wedding prep takes place in The Rothesay Suite, which overlooks leafy Drumsheugh Gardens (perfect for a post-‘I do’ stroll) and comes with a separate living room and bedroom.
No expense has been spared when it comes to your guests though, with all 49 bedrooms boasting their own design; many with beautiful views of the city and quaint Dean Village.
The Marcliffe Hotel and Spa
Sitting in 11 acres of picturesque grounds, The Marcliffe Hotel and Spa is well-known in the northeast of Scotland for its intimacy, family values and five-star service.
The elegant country hotel sits on the outskirts of Aberdeen, close enough to enjoy its conveniences but not too far from rural pursuits, should you wish to partake.
Offering a selection of spaces for events with two to 400 guests, your big day will be tailored to you, from the way the room is dressed to what’s served for dinner. Renowned for exceptional cuisine, The Marcliffe celebrates local, seasonal produce and magical eating experiences. And if you like a tipple, you’ll be impressed by the 400 wines in the cellar and the 100+ whiskies in the bar.
At the end of the night, there are 40 sumptuous suites and bedrooms for you and your guests – bliss!
The Weaving Shed
A charming barn-style venue with a funky industrial vibe set in the centre of town, The Weaving Shed is a one-of-a-kind wedding venue for sure.
With roots in Dundee’s historic textile industry, the former factory offers a super-flexible layout. However it does present itself naturally to offer three defined spaces – one for the ceremony, one for reception drinks (with an adjacent outdoor area) and one for the wedding breakfast, which incorporates the dance floor.
This gorgeous blank canvas can be decorated how you choose but you’ll find the fab team give you fairy lights, and gorgeous wooden tables and benches (perfect alongside the building’s exposed brickwork, beams and skylights) to get you started with nailing that industrial chic vibe.
