When we started planning our honeymoon, we looked at all the usual suspects.
The Maldives, Mexico, Dubai… They all look amazing, but it just wasn’t ‘us’.
It got us thinking: what type of trips do we enjoy the most?
City breaks with an option to relax at a pool or beach were always our favourite types of holiday so we got to work on narrowing down exactly where to go.
The first destination we both landed on was Malta, where we got engaged.
Booking a slightly different area to stay in for one week, we knew we wanted to be away a little longer so started looking at flights out of Malta and settled on an additional four nights in Valencia.
Here’s what we got up to…
Newlywed VIPs
To start off the honeymoon VIP style, it was straight to Edinburgh Airport’s Aspire Lounge at Gate 16.
As soon as we arrived, the team couldn’t do enough to help and we secured a table by the window.
After the whirlwind of wedding planning, the big day itself and then two days of frantically packing, it felt amazing to finally be sitting in the stylish lounge, complete with all the complimentary drinks and delicious food we could want!
100% recommend as the perfect way to begin the newlywed adventure.
Room with a view
We decided to upgrade to a Privilege Suite at Mercure St Julian’s and it was worth it for the massive balcony alone!
Part of the club
If you’re visiting Malta, a day at the Café Del Mar Beach Club is a must.
We decided to book the VIP sunbeds, complete with your own service button to order drinks or snacks – the dream!
We booked lunch here too which was delicious.
It’s the perfect place to stay all day and is the best place in Malta to watch the sunset.
One of our favourite days of the whole trip!
Back to our spot
We got the boat from Sliema over to Valletta and returned to the exact spot where we got engaged in August 2018.
Sitting on the same bench in the Lower Barrakka Gardens, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea now as husband and wife felt such an amazing moment!
Fine dining
One of our bridesmaids gave us a voucher for the Chophouse which is where we went for dinner the night we got engaged.
It was as fabulous as we remembered!
We also had a spectacular meal at Michelin Plate recognised restaurant, Fifty Nine Republic.
Located beside the majestic Grandmaster’s Palace, the setting and entire experience was incredible.
Another must-do for honeymooning in Malta.
Valencia
We had never been to Valencia before, but the MYR Hotel Marqués House had great reviews and was situated perfectly.
The hotel’s bar, Café Madrid, is actually where Valencia’s famous cocktail, the Aigua de València was originally created so, of course, we had to have one (or two).
The boutique hotel also has a beautiful rooftop terrace with views of Valencia’s stunning architecture.
Roaring 20s!
Before we left Malta, we had booked Voltereta Manhattan after seeing the restaurant on TikTok.
On arrival to what looks like a book shop, you’re then ‘transported’ through the (light)years before arriving in ‘1920s Manhattan’.
The food was 10/10 too, as well as the live music and staff all wearing 1920s inspired uniforms.
On the ball
We mostly ate and drank our way around Malta and Valencia, but we did make some time to do a tour of Valencia CF’s famous Mestalla stadium under Brian’s insistence which was actually a really nice morning.
There we go: the start of married life and we’re all about the balance!
