A day of CALM, COLOUR and effortless JOY at the Old Course Hotel in St Andrews

Ross was Elbina’s gym crush for almost a year during her first year at university. And they’ve been inseparable since she finally worked up the courage to message him. Five years later, the pair were on holiday in Dubai visiting Elbina’s family when Ross proposed – a moment she describes as “completely perfect and utterly unexpected”.
They’d planned a relaxed desert dinner at Bab Al Shams Resort, encouraged by Elbina’s mum. As the sun began to set, Ross suggested exploring the upper terrace, which appeared to be empty. “Then he told me how much he loved me and wanted to spend his life with me,” explains Elbina. “I still didn’t realise what was happening until he got down on one knee!”
THE PLANNING
As soon as they got home from Dubai they booked the Old Course Hotel, a venue close to their hearts from their time studying in St Andrews. “There’s nowhere more beautiful. And that view is unbeatable,” says Elbina.
Their theme was lilac with touches of yellow (a nod to their golden engagement sunset). Ever the creative, Elbina designed all the stationery herself with an illustration of the hotel drawn by her youngest sister running through each detail.
Planning came easily. “I’m very organised – a total Type A,” she laughs. “With Jess and the team at the Old Course, everything felt calm and under control. Ross took charge of the music and I handled the rest!”
THE LOOK
Ross wore his Royal Marines dress uniform for part of the day then changed into a kilt in weathered MacKenzie tartan – chosen by accident but later discovered to belong to his mother’s clan. “It couldn’t have been more perfect.”
For Elbina, finding her dress was a joint effort with her mum. “She has incredible taste and suggested one I instantly fell in love with. We later picked an evening dress, and she was right again,” she smiles.
Her ceremony gown by Tony Ward Couture and evening dress by Solace London were paired with Sophia Webster heels – a personal full-circle moment. Years earlier, Elbina had entered a naming competition for the designer’s bridal line, suggesting Deya, her sister’s name. Months later, a pair of heels by that very name was released. “Whether coincidence or fate, I knew they had to be mine.”
Yellow-stone jewellery tied her look to the colour palette, echoing their Dubai proposal.
“There’s nowhere more BEAUTIFUL. And that view is UNBEATABLE.”
THE DAY
After days of rain, the skies cleared to perfect sunshine. “It felt like a blessing. I just knew the day would be beautiful.” The couple shared a private first look before a ceremony that blended traditional Scottish elements with personalised vows that captured their shared sense of adventure and devotion. During the drinks’ reception, their 30 guests were treated to a performance by Pipe Major Scott Methven, whose military background and role as the late Queen’s piper made it especially meaningful for Ross.
Dinner (a choice of two tasting menus perfected by the Old Course team) followed, with Achillea Glasgow providing floral décor and a touch of summer freshness. After heartfelt
speeches, the party moved to the ballroom, where Borrowed Blues filled the night with energy. “They were easily the best band we’ve ever heard,” says Elbina. “Everyone danced all night.”
REFLECTING
Looking back, Elbina says the day couldn’t have gone better. “All our suppliers were incredible and everything came together perfectly. Seeing our friends and family from all over the world in one place was overwhelming in the best way.”
Her advice for couples planning their own day? “Don’t lose yourself in the planning. Enjoy being engaged and trust the people you’ve chosen. It’s not as scary as it seems.”
“All our SUPPLIERS were INCREDIBLE.”

“Bina’s dad was unable to make it so she and Ross walked down the aisle together. Their
first look was magical. Seeing them both in that first moment and how they supported each other was so beautiful.”
