Lucy and Liam met on a night out at the University of St Andrews students’ union while Lucy was still a student and Liam was working in one of the restaurants in the Fife town.
Then after just over six years together, Liam proposed in the beautiful setting of Lundin Links Beach.
As a former wedding planner, Lucy knew it was important for them to decide on a date and venue, as places were already booking up quickly.
With that in mind, they booked Broxmouth Courtyard without even seeing the finished result – because it was still in the process of being built!
The purpose-built venue is situated on the outskirts of the historic fishing town of Dunbar, on the East Lothian coast.
“We chose Broxmouth Courtyard off the architect’s plans, and the amazing team and the delicious-sounding food options sold us,” Lucy explains.
Simple elegance
Lucy was excited to get dress shopping underway, but ended up going for the total opposite of what she thought she wanted.
“I had such a good experience – every shop was so kind and supportive.
“I went with my mum, aunt, mother-in-law and my maid of honour for two days of shopping,” Lucy explains.
“I bought my dress at Madison Rose Bridal in Kirkcaldy. I knew the team from when I worked in the wedding industry so I trusted them wholeheartedly.”
She fell for the ‘Gemini’ dress by Ronald Joyce, a mikado satin fit and flare with dainty pearl straps and belt, along with an A-line full overskirt with lace detailing which she took off after the first dance so she could dance the night away!
“I loved the simple elegance of the dress as it just felt timeless with the added bonus of a built-in second look.”
Lucy accessorised with a cathedral-length pearl veil and a gold and pearl necklace.
She had three bridesmaids and a maid of honour.
“My maid of honour is my oldest childhood friend, then I had my cousin and two best friends from university as bridesmaids.”
She ordered lots of dresses for the girls to try, making the event into a trying-on party!
The firm favourite was an elegant, dusty blue halter neckline with V-cut-out from Azazie.
“Luckily they all agreed pretty quickly that ‘Evalleen’ was the one — we all fell in love with the gorgeous tie back detail and light flowing fabric.”
Liam, meanwhile, wore his own Modern Gunn kilt, which he’d been given for his 21st birthday.
He teamed this with a jacket and waistcoat from Eight Yards while his three groomsmen and best man wore full kilt outfits to match in with his own look
Relaxed and personal
The night before, Lucy and Liam got unpacked and set up, then ordered some pizza and drinks before splitting into girls and guys for the rest of the evening.
Lucy says she got more sleep than she’d expected, but still woke up before everyone else feeling excited.
“I don’t think I could believe the day was finally here,” she recalls.
“It was so lovely spending time with my bridesmaids and mum before the ceremony.
“It was super chill and relaxed – which was totally needed.”
When it was time to walk down the aisle, she felt calm and couldn’t wait to get married to Liam.
She walked to Forever and Ever and Always by Ryan Mack performed by duo Ginny & The Tonic.
The couple chose a humanist ceremony because they wanted it to be relaxed and personal.
“Our celebrant Brian was great. He came through and saved the day when Liam forgot to pack our quaich and kept everyone laughing throughout the ceremony.
“It would not have been the same without him,” Lucy says.
