When it came to wedding planning Sarah and Euan were pretty chilled out.
In fact, a few suppliers on the morning of the big day told Sarah it was the most relaxed bridal party they had dealt with.
That’s not to say there weren’t some busy moments on the run-up to the wedding. “I was told I was very laid back… but a fortnight or so beforehand, I became quite stressed,” remembers Sarah.
But everything came together for the most beautiful and fun-filled wedding, captured by Matthew Johnston Photography. Read on to hear all about it…
Sarah and Euan met at school and had been together for nine years before Euan proposed on Largo beach.
And this decisive groom knew exactly what he wanted in an engagement ring, choosing it within an hour on a trip to York.
“He was ‘away out to book somewhere for dinner’,” smiles Sarah.
Euan choose a diamond flanked by seven smaller diamonds on each shoulder.
A couple of confessed foodies, the meal would play a central role in their planning and they knew they wanted to treat their guests to a barbecue-style wedding breakfast.
And then they fell in love with the pretty setting for this celebration, Backhouse Rossie near Auchtermuchty in Fife.
“The beautiful walled garden is full of flowers and the water running through the centre of the aisle sounds so nice,” Sarah recalls.
“There are so many areas to choose from for every part of the day to really personalise it.”
This laid-back bride originally had one colour scheme in mind but happily switched it as plans developed.
“I initially planned a bold red lipstick and bright red, pink and white flowers, but decided against this when Euan wanted a more earthy green kilt combination,” she explains.
“In the end I went for a neutral make-up look and plain white flowers which tied together perfectly.”
And the couple got help with the DIY details for their big day.
“Thankfully my auntie loves all things decoration, and she helped us with flowers, props and candles to make a beautiful dining and dancing room,” says Sarah.
“We also hired an archway for the ceremony (with one week to go!) and styled it ourselves with a drape and flowers.”
Euan is a joiner and was going to make one, but they were too busy with other things in the lead up to the wedding.

Change of plan
Sarah started bridal shopping with a set idea, but it quickly changed.
“I hoped to find something simple and covered up with long sleeves but ended up with no sleeves and a low back and front with the longest train ever!” she says.
She took her sister Rachel with her, knowing she could trust her for complete honesty and they ended up choosing the first dress Sarah tried on – “when you know, you know!”
She accessorised with a short veil (“which blew off during the ceremony – good lucky apparently!”) and platform shoes as Euan is more than a foot taller than her!
Sarah’s two bridesmaids were her sister and her best friend Chelsea, who she’s known since primary school.
She dressed them in oyster-colour dresses to tie in with the earthy green kilt tones and simple flowers.
Big day dawns
Sarah stayed at her parents’ house the night before, but it was not relaxing.
“I was still writing place cards at 11pm!” she says.
But when she did get to sleep she managed to stay in bed right through until her alarm went off at 6am and remembers that she couldn’t have felt calmer on the morning.
She loved the atmosphere in the house as they got ready with no rushing around until the last 30 minutes.
And that feeling of calm remained as she walked down the aisle to Euan, accompanied by the strains of Caledonia on the pipes.
“I loved hearing the piper play to the guests as I arrived at the venue down the track road,” she says. “It made me feel excited!”
The couple wanted the official part of the day to be straightforward so stuck to a simple civil ceremony.
Looking back at the speeches Sarah says she knew everyone was nervous, but they all went really well – “a mixture of happy, sad and very funny.”
And the meal was interrupted by the Singers Secreto singing waiters who had all their guests up dancing.
Then it was on to The Revues to keep the party and happy vibes going, while guests were also treated to an ice cream van, fire pit and sweet stall.
Sarah admits the feeling was so good that they both got a little carried away by the end of the night.
“Euan lifted me up and we ran around the circle of guests high fiving everyone… thankfully there is no photographic evidence!”

“Sarah and Euan’s wedding felt like spending the day with two close friends! I always make the effort to get to know my couples so that we can create a relaxed and fun atmosphere. I believe that the best photos come from genuine connections, that way all of the ‘awkward moments’ turn into laughter!”
