Edith first met Benjamin when they were both working as healthcare assistants.

“We worked together most shifts for about three months before he changed jobs,” Edith explains.

“It was just coincidence we were paired up all the time to work and we got along so well – we laughed together all the time.”

After two happy years together, Benjamin planned a romantic proposal.

“We had gone out to dinner and we came home to a surprise set-up with roses and him going on his knee to propose to me!”

The couple decided they wanted to have an intimate, fun, classy and satisfying wedding ceremony and planned it all within around five months.

Wanting to feel comfortable in their own space – and finding a lot of venues were already booked up – they chose the majestic surroundings of The Grant Room at Aberdeen’s Marischal College Registration Office.

Jumpsuit goals

Edith decided she didn’t want to have a traditional wedding dress, instead opting for a classy white jumpsuit.

She’d originally wanted one to be handmade but ended up going with plan B of purchasing online.

“My shopping was a bit stressful as I did it online. One of my best mates was actually helping me select and I would send a screenshot and ask what she thought.

“You can never know if you are getting your actual size and if it would look exactly like what you saw, but I loved it! It fitted perfectly – just a tad long – but that was sorted out immediately.”

Edith chose her ‘Reema’ jumpsuit from Club L London’s wedding section.

“It had a classic bardot neckline with long puff sleeves and she thought it stood out as distinctive and something a bit different from a normal bridal dress.

She teamed it with some Zara heels, a necklace from her future mother- in-law and a fascinator that was handmade in Ghana.

Edith’s sister Esperanza was her one and only bridesmaid.

She also helped to create the couple’s stationery and filmed the wedding – what an amazing person to have by her side every step of the way!

“She picked out her own outfit from River Island,” Edith says.

“I just wanted her to be comfortable in whatever she wanted.”

Benjamin, meanwhile, settled on a slick waistcoat and tailored trousers combo with a bow tie as he wasn’t keen on the idea of a three-piece suit.

The night before the wedding was a busy one with family visiting, catching up until late.

So when Edith woke in the morning early to prepare for the day ahead, she was feeling pretty tired.

“I did enjoy the morning,” she says.

“Everyone was happy and I was so nervous I could not eat!”

But Edith didn’t let those nerves get in the way of arriving at Marischal College to walk down the aisle towards Benjamin as That Part by Lauren Spencer Smith rang out.

“I felt extremely happy and I couldn’t believe I was actually getting married!”

They were married by assistant registrar Laura Edwards, who is now Edith’s colleague as she began working as an assistant registrar too after she and Benjamin married.

As they exchanged their vows, Edith says, “We were both grinning from ear to ear.

“It was a dream come true.

“We loved it and it meant a lot to us.”

Our little bubble

Afterwards they headed back to their home to celebrate.

“It was a really small reception with family and friends.

“We just wanted everyone to feel welcome and loved,” smiles Edith.

Their caterer created a banquet consisting of jollof rice, fried rice, peppered chicken, pepper soup, spring rolls, samosas, salad, nuts, crisps, crackers and cheese.

Meanwhile the drinks were in full flow as celebrations got underway.

Edith describes the evening as, “Filled with laughter, music, love and jokes.”

Looking back on the planning process Edith says it wasn’t too stressful – but definitely not something she would want to do every day!

She reckons the hardest parts were finding an outfit and sorting out all the plans for the reception and the most fun was, “The thought of being together forever in our little bubble.”

Her highlight of the day was the moment they were pronounced as husband and wife: “We both could not stop smiling!”

She describes being married as “amazing” and advises readers planning their own wedding day to, “Make up your mind on what you want, who you want to be with you, be certain of everything you do and be intentional about decisions involving your partner.”

“Edith and Ben are such a lovely couple and so easy to photograph, they look and pose like professional models! I felt so honoured being one of three to witness them get married. I absolutely love elopements, they feel so special, intimate and are all about the couple.”
